Sixth annual Evening of Jazz to recognize Katrina evacuees

Black MBA association to honor undergrads

The Black MBA Association's sixth annual Evening of Jazz will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday night at Tutto Bene, located at 213 S. Rogers St.\n"It's an opportunity for the whole campus community to come out and enjoy some good networking, wine and food," said graduate student and President of the Black MBA Khary Dickerson.\nAlong with a presentation on the history of jazz, IU Soul Revue Director Nathanael Fareed Mahluli will perform jazz with a five-piece ensemble, the Jazz Collectives -- a performance Dickerson promises will be worthwhile.\n"(Mahluli will) pull people out of the crowd and let them sing up there with him," Dickerson said.\nTickets are $13 at the door and displaced students from New Orleans will receive free admission.\n"We just want to acknowledge them," Dickerson said, adding that he knows of at least four students from that city still present on campus from New Orleans. "Everyone we could find, we invited them out," he said.\nThe event will also recognize the two recipients of the Black MBA undergraduate scholarships, freshman Erin Norton and sophomore Ebony Brown. \nDickerson called Evening of Jazz the Black MBA Association's largest event for the year, and said he expects at least 120 to attend, drawing on last year's attendance of 150.\n"This is not a money-maker for us by any means," he said. "We have a lot of international students within our program, and they will have an opportunity to be exposed to jazz."\nFor more information on the event, which is open to the public, contact Dickerson at khdicker@indiana.edu.
