Colts evade Jaguars, 21-14

Indianapolis reels off 10th straight division win, improves to 3-0 overall

INDIANAPOLIS -- With the Colts down 7-0 in the first half -- and unable to move the ball -- Terrence Wilkins saw his opportunity. \nWilkins watched film all week on the vaunted Jacksonville Jaguars punt coverage team, looking for holes or any sign of weakness. Sunday, he found one and with an 82-yard touchdown return, injected life back into the Indianapolis offense, which went on to defeat the Jaguars 21-14.\n"I've been waiting for a hole all season," Wilkins said. "There are few opportunities; you got to take them as they come."\nIndianapolis (3-0) has now won 10 straight division games and beat Jacksonville for the fourth time in five tries.\n"That was a real lift for us," said quarterback Peyton Manning, whose Colts won their second straight home game over a division foe.\nThe Jaguars (2-1) were no pushover though. Their game plan was to play keep away from the Colts for most of the day, and it worked for the most part as Jacksonville chewed up nearly 20 more minutes of the clock than the Colts. Indianapolis ran just nine offensive plays in the first 27 minutes and was kept off the field by Jacksonville's ability to exploit the gaping holes opened for Fred Taylor and Maurice Drew. The Jaguars rushed for 105 yards in the first quarter, using the tandem of Taylor and Drew to dominate the game in the early going. Taylor rushed 21 times for 74 yards, while Drew had 13 carries for 103 yards and four receptions for 32 yards, including a 7-yard touchdown late in the game.\n"I wasn't worried," said Colts head coach Tony Dungy. "We were getting dominated in the first half, but the score was still 7-7. I told the guys if we make the adjustments, we will win."\nThe Colts finally started to move the ball in the third quarter as Manning hooked up with tight end Dallas Clark for a 30-yard touchdown pass to take the lead 14-7.\nThe Colts third score showed off Manning's scrambling ability as he bootlegged to the left, leaving Jaguars defenders falling over themselves and fooling everyone, including his teammates.\n"Coach Dungy told me to keep it ... so I didn't tell anyone else, not even the runningback," said Manning, who was afraid the Colts might block differently if he let them know he was going to run it in. \nHe didn't celebrate, though. \n"I haven't scored a touchdown in awhile, so I didn't really know what to do, I just handed the ball to the ref," Manning said. \nManning finished the day with 219 passing yards, including a passing and rushing touchdown.\nThe game wasn't over as Jacksonville made a late surge and had a chance to tie on the last drive before Colts safety Mike Doss stepped in and intercepted a Byron Leftwich pass.\n"It was a typical Colts/Jaguars game. Very physical. It always comes down to the last series," Manning said. "It kind of depends on who has the ball last."\nThe win was made even more significant by the Jaguars' coming off an impressive Monday night win against the defending Super Bowl-champion Pittsburgh Steelers.\n"I know we'll see these guys again," Dungy said. "They will be chasing us and hopefully we can stay in front of them"
