School of Music Summer Festival has international appeal

Guest musicians highlight of summer festival

The Summer Music Festival's reputation for drawing scholars and musicians internationally is renewed this year thanks to a concert performed by violinist Joshua Bell, as well as appearances from conductors Michael Stern and Leonard Slatkin. \nBell will lead the first concert of this year's Summer Music Festival Orchestra June 29. Bell is an IU alumnus who has won many awards, including a Grammy.\nOther appearances in the Festival Orchestra include the founder of the IRIS Chamber Orchestra Michael Stern, who will be conducting the Festival Orchestra July 20. Slatkin has conducted for the National Symphony Orchestra for 10 years and will be guest conducting the Festival Orchestra August 3. \nAnother highlight for this year's festival is the first appearance of a Festival Jazz Orchestra fronted by David Baker, an IU jazz professor and composer. The Festival Jazz Orchestra will have its first performance June 30. Baker is also conducting the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra. \nVisit www.music.indiana.edu for more information on performances and buying tickets.
