MUNCIE — In front of a record crowd at Scheumann Stadium, the IU football team rebounded from a 23-7 first-half deficit to defeat the Ball State University Cardinals 24-23 Saturday night.\nBall State opened the game with an 80-yard scoring drive. Quarterback Joey Lynch completed a two-yard touchdown pass to fullback Brad Salyer to cap the drive and give the Cardinals a 7-0 lead. \nSenior Graeme McFarland opened the game as quarterback for IU.\nAfter an IU three-and-out, Ball State scored again to take an early 14-0 lead. With 7:30 remaining in the first quarter, Lynch threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this time to wide receiver Terry Moss. \nThe Hoosiers kept Ball State from scoring on its third drive thanks to an interception by junior cornerback Tracy Porter. After the interception, redshirt freshman quarterback Kellen Lewis replaced McFarland for the Hoosiers. \nAfter a short punt by IU redshirt senior Tyson Beattie, Ball State took advantage of the good field position despite being pushed back by the Hoosier defensive line. Ball State kicker Brian Jackson connected on a 52-yard field goal attempt to give the Cardinals a 17-0 lead with 8:25 left in the second quarter. \nSophomore return man Marcus Thigpen put the Hoosiers on the board on the ensuing kickoff, returning the ball 100 yards for a touchdown. \nLynch tossed his third touchdown pass of the game late in the second quarter, connecting on a 40-yard pass to tight end Darius Hill to give the Cardinals a 23-7 lead after Jackson's PAT attempt went wide right. \nOn the first drive of the second half, Lewis marched the offense down the field and finished off the drive with a strike to sophomore wide receiver James Hardy. The touchdown cut into Ball State's lead, making it a 23-14 game. \nAfter Jackson missed a field goal for the Cardinals, Lewis led the IU offense down the field for the third Hoosiers touchdown. Lewis scrambled to the far sideline and, unable to find an open receiver, reversed his field and ran into the end zone virtually untouched for a 23-21 score with Ball State leading.\nThe Hoosiers took the lead for the first time with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal from redshirt sophomore kicker Austin Starr. \nThe final score was 24-23, Hoosiers.
