Hooisers upset No. 13 Iowa in 31-28 home win

Coming off an exciting Big Ten road victory last weekend at Illinois, the IU football team upset No. 13 Iowa 31-28 at Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon.\nThe win lifted IU to 4-3 overall this season and 2-1 in Big Ten play.\nSaturday's game got off to a rocky start with both teams struggling to get into a rhythm. The first quarter ended with Iowa claiming a 14-7 lead, but penalties were the early story.\nThree personal fouls were issued -- two for IU and one for Iowa -- with five penalties called overall. Hawkeye kicker Kyle Schlicher could not connect on two field goal attempts in the opening frame, missing attempts from 51 and 37 yards, respectively.\nFreshman quarterback Kellen Lewis hooked up with sophomore receiver James Hardy in the end zone on a 15-yard completion for the lone Hoosier score in the opening quarter.\nAfter an Iowa touchdown on a reverse, IU scored on its last two drives of the half, bringing the score to 21-17 heading into the half.\nWith 3:25 remaining in the second quarter, Lewis capped off a drive with a 2-yard touchdown run. \nAfter the IU defense held Iowa down on its next drive, Lewis once again led the team within field goal range, allowing sophomore kicker Austin Starr to hit a 46-yard field goal as time expired in the half.\nTaking advantage of a Hawkeye fumble, the Hoosiers scored on a 10-play, 88-yard drive late in the third quarter. Lewis connected with Hardy for their second touchdown of the day. The touchdown with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter gave IU its first lead of the game at 24-21.\nIowa wasted no time regaining the lead on its next drive. Junior running back Damian Sims notched his first score of the day on a 1-yd run with 12:36 remaining in the game. With Schlicher's PAT, Iowa took the 28-24 lead.\nThe Hoosiers continued to click on offense with Lewis leading his fourth touchdown drive of the day, giving the Hoosiers the three point edge with 9:51 left in the game.\nThen with less than three minutes to go, senior safety Will Meyers intercepted a tipped ball on IU's own 15-yard line.\nThe Hoosiers were able to run out the clock, preserving the upset victory.
