WEST LAFAYETTE—With bowl eligibility on the line Saturday, the IU football team fell short of its season-long goal of "playing 13" as the Hoosiers fell 28-19 to in-state rival Purdue.\nIn a sloppy first half that featured eight turnovers, Purdue held the 7-3 lead at halftime. \nAfter the Boilers blocked a Tyson Beattie punt, sophomore running back Jaycen Taylor capped off a drive with a one-yard touchdown run, giving Purdue the early 7-0 lead.\nOn the next drive, the Hoosiers wasted a 71-yard drive when freshman running back Demetrius McCray fumbled on the Purdue one-yard line.\nIU scored its first points of the game in the second quarter on an Austin Starr 23-yard field goal that was set up by a Kellen Lewis 62-yard run. \nBut the story of the first half was turnovers with IU losing four fumbles, Painter throwing three interceptions, and Purdue losing a fumble of their own.\nThe low-light of the half came in the second quarter when junior cornerback Tracy Porter recovered the Boilermaker fumble on the IU 29-yard line, returned it 57 yards before fumbling the ball. The loose ball bounced out the back end of IU's end zone giving Purdue possession on its own 20-yard line.\nPurdue did not capitalize on the turn of events, punting five plays later. The Hoosiers were not able to score in the last two minutes of the half, preserving the 7-3 score.\nIU and Purdue exchanged touchdowns in the second quarter with the Hoosiers getting one on the legs of Lewis -- a 15-yard run -- while the Boilers notched one in the air and one on the ground. Starr notched his second field goal of the day to cut Purdue's lead to just eight points heading into the fourth quarter.\nThe sophomore kicker would miss his next attempt, a 25-yarder with 11:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.\nOn the first play of Purdue's next drive, Porter picked off Painter -- his fourth interception of the game -- giving the Hoosiers another chance to cut into the lead. On a fourth-and-seven, Lewis found receiver James Hardy in the end zone, but failed to convert the two-point opportunity.\nAttempting to ice the game, Purdue drove down the field and on a reverse handoff receiver Dorien Bryant scampered into the end zone for the touchdown. \nDown 28-19 in the game's closing minutes, the Hoosiers were unable to get over the hump, falling in their season finale. IU finished 5-7 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play.\nLook for complete coverage of Saturday's game in Monday's IDS.
