ARTiFACTS

WHAT: Female figure attributed to the Goulandris Master, Cylcadic 2700 to 2400 B.C., Marble with traces of red paint

WHERE to find it: IU Art Museum, 1133 E. Seventh St.

WHY you should care: Carved out of crystalline island marble, this figurine is a superb example of pre-Greek art from the same period as Egypt's Old Kingdom pyramids. Female figures of this kind were found in both burial sites and sanctuaries, but their specific function is not known. The abstract simplicity of the sculpture is amazingly modern-looking.
