ARTiFACTS

What: Self-portrait (torso with head bent to right) by Egon Schiele of Austria in 1910. Crayon, gouache and watercolor on paper.

Where to find it: IU Art Museum, 1133 E. Seventh St.

Why you should care: This is one of a series of drawings from a period when Schiele intensely explored his own image. Many of the characteristic visual devices which he used in 1910 are present, including the truncated limbs and torso, the white astral glow around the body and the intense expression. The IU Art Museum works-on-paper collection includes four other works by this artist: two graphite drawings of female nudes, a crayon study of Rupert Kollen and a drypoint portrait of Arthur Roessler.
