For the first time in 14 seasons, the IU volleyball program has a new leader. \nThe IU Athletics Department announced Dec. 17 that former College of Charleston coach Sherry Dunbar will lead IU volleyball, after Katie Weismiller decided not to pursue a contract renewal in late November.\n"After conducting a national search, we determined that Coach Dunbar was without a doubt the right person to lead our volleyball program," IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan said in a statement.\nDunbar, who graduated from Ball State and Edgewood High School in nearby Ellettsville, was the head coach at the College of Charleston for the last four seasons. \nWhile at the College of Charleston, Dunbar's teams compiled a 113-22 overall record, won four regular season Southern Conference titles and three conference tournament titles, and earned three trips to the regional round of the NCAA Tournament.\nBefore taking over as head coach at Charleston, Dunbar was an assistant at Tennessee and San Francisco.\nDunbar spent her playing days at Ball State, where she was a four-year starter and finished her career as the Cardinals' all-time leader in blocks. \n"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to come to Indiana University and lead the volleyball program," Dunbar said in a statement. "We are looking forward to building Indiana into a team that can compete with the best in the Big Ten Conference and achieve a high level of success."\nDunbar's hiring came less than a month after Weismiller stepped down, ending an up-and-down 14-year career as IU's head coach.\n"I am incredibly thankful to Indiana University, the athletic department, administration, students, parents and the Bloomington community for the opportunity to serve IU for the past 14 years," Weismiller said. "It has been an honor to represent Indiana University as the head volleyball coach."\nShe left as IU's all-time leader in coaching wins, compiling a 198-240 record and four NCAA Tournament appearances.\nRecently, however, her team struggled. This year's squad finished 10-22 overall and 1-19 in conference play. It finished the season with 19 straight losses.
