No. 18 Purdue swims past No. 11 IU to end regular season action

Teams prep for next month's Big Ten championships

In its final dual meet before the Big Ten championships, the IU men's swimming and diving team suffered a setback at Purdue. \nThe No. 11 Hoosiers dropped a 125-118 dual meet to No. 18 Purdue at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. \nIU won seven events, but three disqualifications severely undercut its chances on the road. Two of IU's 400-yard medley relay teams were disqualified, as was junior Ben Hesen in the 200-yard backstroke. \n"You just can't do that, especially on the road," IU coach Ray Looze said. "You can't have one DQ, let alone three. It gives a team as good as Purdue too much of an opportunity. I have to point the finger at myself. We swam well enough to win but unfortunately we let one get away."\nIU got two individual wins apiece from juniors Todd Patrick and Alex Brunfeldt. Patrick took first in the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard individual medley. Brunfeldt swam well in the distance events, winning the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle events. \nSophomore Matt Lenton added a win in the 50-yard freestyle and junior Pat Penoyar picked up a win in the 200-yard breaststroke. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Lenton, senior Lee Houchin, Hesen and sophomore Nick Walkotten notched the final win of the meet for the Hoosiers. \nOn the diving side, IU was impressive against a strong Boilermaker squad. Junior Taylor Roberts won the 3-meter diving. Juniors Justin Montrie and David Legler, as well as sophomore Will Bohonyi finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively. On the platform, Bohonyi took third and Legler finished fourth. \nAlthough the Hoosiers left West Lafayette disappointed, they have two weeks to forget about the loss and prepare for the Big Ten Championships. \n"We have a bad taste in our mouth that we have to live with for the next few weeks," Looze said. "The good thing is this didn't happen during a championship meet like the Big Tens or the NCAAs. Now we need to fine tune for the Big Tens. The money is in the bank as far as training and conditioning. We still have work to do, but we can't go back and change our conditioning. I'm very confident in that regard"
