ARTiFACTS

What: Antelope headdress, known as a Ci Wara or Sogoni Kun, of the Bamana peoples, Mali, West Africa.

Where to find it: IU Art Museum

Why you should care: The strength and grace of an antelope are clearly conveyed in this sculpture, which was meant to be worn affixed to a basketry cap. Strength and grace are also characteristics the Bamana deem necessary for a person to be a good and successful farmer. It is particularly appropriate this image appears at dances and ceremonies affirming the importance of agriculture. This antelope was no doubt carved by a blacksmith. In addition to working with iron, Bamana blacksmiths are also the traditional makers of all wooden masks and headdresses.
