Camerata to warm up listeners with 'Russian Favorites'

Solo violinist to perform at concert

The Camerata Orchestra Series, in its 18th season, will present "Russian Favorites" at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Bloomington High School North Auditorium.\nThe orchestra is made up of current and former IU faculty, music students and local residents, and it often features internationally known guest conductors and soloists. Sunday's performance will be conducted by Paul Gambill and will feature IU graduate student Nathan Giem on violin. \nGambill, who is also a hornist, earned his Master of Music degree from IU in 1986. He founded the Nashville Chamber Orchestra in 1990, where he remains committed to featuring composers as ambassadors for community-wide partnerships. He has commissioned 36 works from American composers. NCO opened the inaugral season at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville last year. Gambill is also the Music Director of the Nashville Ballet, which performs with the Nashville Symphony. This is Gambill's fourth time conducting the Camerata Orchestra.\nNathan Giem began his violin studies at the Jacobs School of Music at age 15 and received his Bachelor's in Music in 2002, a Performer's Diploma in 2003 and a Master of Music degree in 2005. Giem is currently in the Artist Diploma program at Jacobs. He is performing in Sunday's concert as part of the first-place prize he won last year at the Camerata's 13th Solo Competition. \nThe concert will feature Glinka's "Overture Russlan and Ludmilla," Sergei Prokofeiv's "Violin Concerto No. 2," and "Symphony No. 5" by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky.\nTickets, $4 for students and $12 for adults, are available at the door. Adult tickets can also be purchased for $10 at O'Malia's, 512 College Mall Road. For more information, call 333-6349.
