IU captures 2nd straight tourney, heads into Big Ten

Campillo takes first place again to lead Hoosiers

The men’s golf team won its second consecutive tournament title this weekend at the Pinehurst, N.C., Intercollegiate tournament. Sophomore Jorge Campillo also finished first individually, scoring a three-under-par total of 213 (73-67-73). This is the second consecutive first-place finish for Campillo.\n“Jorge beat 96 players,” IU coach Mike Mayer said. “He’s one of the best amateurs in the country.” \nCampillo was backed by sophomore Drew Allenspach, who finished in a tie for 10th place, shooting a total of 220 (71-74-75). Finishing next for the Hoosiers was sophomore Seth Brandon, also in a tie, for 15th. Brandon shot a total of 222 (76-76-70). \nBrandon Pike, also a sophomore, tied for 29th, shooting 226 (77-76-73). Junior Santiago Quirarte completed the Hoosiers’ solid placing in a tie for 54th, with a score of 232 (80-78-74).\nFreshman Alex Martin competed individually and tied for 18th totaling 223 (75-73-75).\nThe men competed in the 3-day tournament, finishing a total of 54 holes. The team spent its spring break in North Carolina, taking a break from the cold weather in Bloomington to get some practice on green grass.\nWhile the Hoosiers finished with a win, the tournament was a close competition. IU won by only one stroke going into the final round. The Hoosiers finished five strokes ahead of its next competitor, Michigan, with a team total of 880 (297-293-290). \nAlso finishing in the top five were Penn State, Wisconsin, and Southern Methodist. \n“It was fun,” Campillo said. “I’m just going to keep playing well and hope that the team continues to help.” \nThe win definitely gave the team confidence, Mayer added, and marks the first time the team has won consecutive tournaments since the 2003-2004 season, during which the team won three consecutive competitions.\n“We were all supporting each other which was big,” Allenspach said.\nAs far as the rest of the season, the team hopes to continue winning, and play well as a team. Both Mayer and the players are confident in the rest of the season, and hope that they can carry this confidence throughout the rest of the spring and on into the Big Ten tournament.\n“We just need to keep working on what we’re doing,” Brandon said. “And keep winning. The Big Tens, especially.”
