The IU men’s golf team will play its last regular-season tournament this weekend at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. \nThirteen teams will be in the tournament field, including host Michigan State.\nCompeting for the Hoosiers are junior Santiago Quirarte; sophomores Jorge Campillo, Seth Brandon and Drew Allenspach; and freshman Alex Martin.\nWith the Big Ten tournament approaching, the team is hoping for strong contributions from the fourth and fifth players.\n“Overall, we’re looking for a little more consistency,” IU coach Mike Mayer said.\nIU has won the Fossum/Spartan Invitational two of the last three years. The weather, which has been problematic for the team’s last two tournaments, looks to improve this weekend.\n“Very truthfully,” Mayer said, “we’re looking for some decent weather to afford us the opportunity to show our talents a little bit.” \nAs defending champions, the Hoosiers will rely heavily on confidence to boost their play. The course features fast greens with steep slopes, forcing teams to tighten their putting. \nMayer said the course requires a lot of finesse, which makes the par 72 a much more attainable number. The tournament will be two days, with 36 holes played Saturday and 18 Sunday.\nThis weekend will be an important test of the Hoosiers’ abilities before the Big Ten tournament, and the men hope to get their games tightened up before the post season. \n“We had two weeks that were kind of offbeat,” Brandon said, “and we need to get back on track, especially before regionals.”
