The IU men’s golf team finished seventh this weekend at its final regular-season tournament. The Fossum/Spartan Invitational took place in East Lansing, Mich., home of host Michigan State. \nThe men played a total of 54 holes – two rounds on Saturday and a final round on Sunday morning. \n“I really felt that in our last two rounds we played solid golf,” IU coach Mike Mayer said. “Not great golf, but solid golf. However, we put ourselves in way to big of a hole with the first round, especially in this quality of a field.”\nThe team came back after a rough first two rounds, after which it was in 11th place. Freshman Alex Martin led the Hoosiers with a career-low, one-under-par score of 143 (72-71). \nThe rest of the team trailed behind Martin on Saturday afternoon, leaving a large gap to fill Sunday morning. \n“I’m proud of the way the team came back,” Mayer said. “They easily could have just folded after the first round, given up and finished last, but they didn’t and that will give them some momentum heading into the Big Ten championship. They fought and did the best that they could do in the final two rounds.” \nThe team, which was defending champion at the Fossum/Spartan Invitational, now looks to prepare for the Big Ten tournament which will take place this weekend in Columbus, Ohio. \n“It was just one of those tournaments that we weren’t clicking,” Mayer said. “Now we’re just looking ahead to next week at Big Ten’s.”
