Young artists will be rewarded for their contributions and efforts this Sunday at the John Waldron Arts Center. \nThe Bloomington chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters will host its 41st competition this Sunday with a showcase of 12 of the most talented young artists around Indiana.\nThe performance will begin at 2 p.m. at the John Waldron Auditorium. The winners’ pieces of the visual arts competition will also be on display and open to the public from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Rosemary P. Miller Gallery at the Waldron.\nThe competitors will be judged for art, dance, drama, literature, music and musical theater. A panel of judges will be surveying the art and the competitors during the event.\nWith six competitions acknowledging young artists and musicians, the Bloomington chapter is a strong section of the NSAL, said Ruth Albright, the national president of the organization.\n“Our chapter is different than most, we try to keep continuity throughout the years by promoting competition is all six areas of art for competitors in the Bloomington region every year,” Albright said.\nThe society has been committed to encouraging and assisting talented young artists around the country through scholarships, competitions and even career opportunities, according to its Web site. \nEvery year there is one national competition. This year the competition will include voice, violin and visual arts.\nThe winner of the visual arts competition from the Bloomington will join with others from around the country on May 17 in Tempe, Arizona to compete, Albright said.\nThroughout the year, the Bloomington chapter hosts various events usually reserved for members of the society, which is comprised about 125 professional artists and those interested in young talent who donate time and money to the competitions each year, Albright said.\nThe organization expects to give away over $20,000 in donations to the winners at the Waldron this Sunday, she said. \nFor more information about NSAL, visit www.arts-nsal.org.
