The Complete Moron's Guide to: Printmaking

The printmaking Master of Fine Arts students will be hosting a show tonight at the historic Ladyman’s Cafe. This is going to be a unique show because the artists had complete freedom to demolish walls and paint the floors to display their work. We at the Arts Desk highly recommend you take a break from your Little 500 festivities to see this exhibition and take a look at a list of terms to help you understand the artwork.

After:\nA copy from a drawing or painting by another artist.

Blind stamp: \nAn embossed seal specific to each artist, publisher, institution or collector.

Gum arabic: \nMade from secretions of the acacia tree. Adds depth and texture to some antique hand-colored prints. It can be seen by holding the print at an angle to a light source.

Intaglio: \nType of printing where the image is applied through pressure from a design incised or etched into the surface of a plate.

Matrix: \nAn object to create a print, usually made of wood, metal or stone, that makes an impression on a piece of paper.
