Poster sale generates $8,000 for student club

Annual event will continue daily through Aug. 31

Rows of large tables covered with different posters geared at college student’s different tastes and personalities filled the Georgian Room at the Indiana Memorial Union on Wednesday. \nOld movie posters like “The Godfather” are next to posters from “Wedding Crashers.” Melting clock prints by Salvador Dali are amongst pictures of sunsets and posters displaying drinking games.\nThe annual poster sale, hosted by IU Outdoor Adventures, lasts from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until Aug. 31. Most prints range between $7 and $9. \nThough the posters may be inexpensive, the money raised adds up.\nDave Calvin, program coordinator for IU Outdoor Adventures , said the poster sale generates about $8,000 in revenue. IU Outdoor Adventures holds the sale each year to keep student rates affordable.\n“(Outdoor Adventures) might plan a trip with reduced rates for transportation or food because of the money raised during the poster sale,” Calvin said. \nThe poster sale has been supplying IU Outdoor Adventures with fundraising for more than 14 years, he said. \nSophomore Kaitlin Williams said she purchased a Japanese print to match her Japanese-themed room. \n“I had a little bit of white space left and I needed something to fill it,” Williams said. \nShe said she went to the poster sale last year and came back this year because the prices are cheaper than anywhere else in town. \nA New York-based company called “The College Poster Sale” supplies all of the posters, said Karen Krinsky, the company’s tour director. Trucks are loaded up with thousands of different posters and shipped to schools all over the Midwest and on the East Coast from Florida to upstate New York. \nKrinsky said that this year they are adding concert posters from bands with roots in the ‘60s and ‘70s. \nShe said that the most popular posters are from the movie “300,” along with vintage and retro advertisements, but the company sells classic re-prints and beer, alcohol and sex-related posters as well. Krinsky said that the wide selection ensures any student can find a poster that represents his or her interests.
