Two single-file lines engulfed the entrance to the Student Recreational Sports Center Tuesday, while a constant stream of people exiting the gym created a scene reminiscent of a crowded city subway. \nAnd the people in charge of Recreational Sports at IU would like to keep it that way. \n“We’re here to create some excitement, give people a smile when they come in the doors,” said Brent Ling, a RecSports marketing assistant. \nPeople rushed by the RecSports tent at the SRSCs south entrance, grabbing free water bottles, ID card holders, magnets and popcorn, which were designed to promote what RecSports has to offer students.\nRecSports’ kickoff began last Monday and continues through tonight.\n“We are trying to provide (students) with information about RecSports,” employee Tiffany Mast said. “We want to let them know what’s available all semester long.” \nAccording to a survey conducted by the RecSports team, roughly 88 percent of students participate in RecSports activities each year. Activities at the SRSC include strength and conditioning programs, cardio programs and sports such as basketball and badminton. \n“We have so many options to choose from,” RecSports assistant director for special events Joanne Orrange said. “With about 80 scheduled sessions a week, you can do whatever you want to try.” \nWhen students enroll at IU, they pay $45.58 for their activities fee, which includes an RS membership. The membership allows students access to IU athletic facilities including the SRSC and HPER buildings. \nRecSports membership allows students to participate in both free and paid events. Almost all scheduled group exercise events do not require registration or fees. \nThe CycleFit program – an indoor cycling program designed to simulate the stresses of riding a bicycle on varied terrain – is free until Oct. 22, but still requires a reservation. After Oct. 22, students must pay $21 for the seven-week program. Registration for that program begins Oct. 8. \n“We had to go to a new format for CycleFit,” Orrange said. “All of the bikes were occupied quickly, and we had too much demand. Often people would not show up and there would be confusion. This way, people will have their spot reserved for seven weeks at a time and not worry about losing it.” \nBeyond the options of what’s covered by the activities fee, students can sign up for a variety of club sports, aquatics classes and personal training sessions. \n“I love what the RecSports has to offer,” junior Ben Sheu said. “I participate in every sport, and (I) am excited about what RecSports is going to do in the future.” \nFor more information about what RecSports programs are available, go to http//:recsports.indiana.edu or visit the RecSports office located inside the SRSC. \n“We want to promote an active and healthy lifestyle for our students,” said Orrange.
