IU finishes strong to take 3rd place

Hoosiers improve over 2-day Windon Memorial Classic

For the second straight week, the IU men’s golf team took its game to the suburbs of Chicago for a weekend invitational. \nThe No. 22-ranked Hoosiers took third place in the Windon Memorial Classic. The tournament, hosted by Northwestern, took place at the Lake Shore Country Club (par 71, 6,667 yards) in Glencoe, Ill.\nIU struggled during the first two rounds of the tournament Sunday and finished the day in seventh place. The performance was a disappointing start for the Hoosiers, who entered the 13-team tournament as the highest-ranked team. \nHowever, during the final 18 holes on Monday, everything seemed to click for the Hoosiers, as they stroked their way from seventh all the way up to a third-place finish. The 6-under-par round 278 IU shot on the final round was the second-lowest of the tournament. \nJuniors Jorge Campillo and Drew Allenspach led the Hoosiers’ final-round surge.\nCampillo earned a tie for seventh place with an impressive 3-under-par 68 on Monday. It was Campillo’s third straight top-10 finish, bringing his career total to 16.\nJunior Seth Brandon also finished in the top 10 for the Hoosiers. His three-round 212 (69-71-72) was good enough for a share of 10th place. \nAllenspach’s performance in the final round Monday was the best of his career and the best round of any Hoosier in the tournament, shooting a 4-under-par 67. Allenspach’s three-round 217 (74-76-67) was his lowest 54-hole total of the fall season.\n“We’ve been waiting for Drew Allenspach to join us, and he did in a big way,” IU coach Mike Mayer said in an IU Athletics Department press release. “That is the kind of performance we need from Drew and expect from Drew. If we get that type of effort, it adds a whole new element to this team.” \nJunior Eric Serch hit the links for the first time in his collegiate career and finished well with a 54-hole total of 223 (74-76-73). His final round 2-over-par 73 continued the trend of finishing the tournament on a strong note. Serch finished in a tie for 43rd place. \nSophomore Alex Martin finished the Windon Memorial in a tie for 16th place Monday. Martin’s game was consistent all weekend, with rounds of 72, 72 and 71. \nThe Hoosiers’ team score of 855 was six strokes behind runner up Kent State (849) and just seven strokes behind champion host-Northwestern (848).\nThe team will be off the next two weekends before heading south for the University of North Carolina-Greensboro Bridgestone Collegiate on Oct. 29 and 30.
