A season of choices

There are millions of types of jeans in the world. Skinny, boot cut, wide leg, dark wash, low rise, high waist – what is a girl to do? Finding a pair of trendy jeans in the right cut and wash is nearly impossible. This season though, straying away from their normal strictly one-cut-of-jean idea, designers have chosen two very different cuts for us, the general public, to choose from.\nWhile for the past few seasons we have seen jeans saunter down the runway that are such a skinny cut that Nicole Richie would be hard-pressed to fit into them, this season, we get a reprise. The skinny jean has by no means had its day, but the fashion gods have given us a very different type of jean to put on one leg at a time: the trouser jean.\nThis type of denim is exactly what it sounds like: jeans cut like trousers. They are normally seen in a dark, lighter-weight fabric, with a good amount of stretch in them. The pantleg flares out at the knee, with a leg opening that is wide enough to cover the foot completely. A version of the flare jean – which we have not seen on the runway in many seasons – the trouser jean is a very flattering cut. Look for a pair that fit the same way as your favorite dress pants. Most of these jeans are formal enough to wear to a casual evening function if they are dressed up by a nice shirt and pair of heels. And don’t even think about wearing trouser jeans with a loose fitting shirt; balance the wide opening of the pant with a close fitting top. Also, skip this style if you are shorter and do not believe in hemming your clothing.\nIf you are not a fan of the looser jean, or are simply having a hard time accepting the fact that your beloved skinny jeans now have competition, don’t fret. Even though the wide-leg jean is the newest, freshest silhouette for the season, the skinny jean is still very acceptable, and I expect that the trend will continue to have legs for another two to three seasons. Keep wearing those skinny jeans in a nice, dark wash, with heavier fabric than the trouser jean, but still with a little stretch to allow for a bit of give in the body-hugging cut. Again, keep balance in mind when pulling on your jeans in the morning, keeping the proportions of your body in check with a looser fitting top, unless you are one of the brave ones, and prefer to wear a body hugging top with your skinny-cut jeans. This cut looks great on nearly any body type, lengthening the leg and giving a skinnier silhouette in general.\nThe skinny jean also allows the wearer to show off a cute pair of boots, as the cut is perfect for tucking into said boots. A slouchy, leather version always looks good. Also, Chuck Taylor’s always look great with skinny jeans (or any jeans in general).\nThis season is all about choices. For once, designers have given womankind the choice as to what type of denim she prefers. There is a multitude of jeans out there so it’s just a matter of finding a pair that works for you. And trust me, just like the perfect guy is out there, so is the perfect pair of jeans, just waiting to be found.
