In every healthy relationship, there are said to be several key elements: trust, honesty and respect. But what happens when all of these things are completely thrown out the window?\nSuch burning questions can be answered by the IU Department of Theatre and Drama’s production of Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thing,” opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Wells-Metz Theatre. In his play, Stoppard, an award-winning playwright, brings new meaning to finding “the real thing” in life and marriage.\n“The Real Thing” is the story of playwright Henry, played by graduate student Jeff Grafton in his thesis role, and Henry’s wife, actress Charlotte, played by junior Erin Ehlers. Problems arise when Henry falls in love with another actress, Annie, portrayed by graduate student Lilia Vassileva. As the story unfolds, underlying themes of love, adultery and art begin to break new light.\n“(The play) presents a successful playwright who travels a tortuous journey – finding real life while he is already in a committed relationship, then struggling to overcome his new love,” said director Bruce Burgun, an associate professor of acting and directing at IU in an e-mail. “All the while, he grapples for an ultimate understanding of what love actually is.” \nStoppard has often been criticized for his use of the English language. Many of his critics claim his plays are hard to understand, and lack emotion, due to the overuse of intellectual phrases. That shouldn’t be the case with this play.\n“His linguistic acrobatics make many of his plays end up feeling academic,” said John Kinzer, director of audience development for the theater department. “This is his most passionate piece, exploring what we all yearn for.”\nThe show is meant for all ages.\n“The most important thing is that everyone will (be able to) identify with at least one of the characters, and the struggle of love and loss.” Grafton said.\n“The Real Thing” will show at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and Oct. 23-27 in the Wells-Metz Theatre. Tickets are $16 for adults and $13 for students and seniors during weeknight performances. Student rush tickets are available the day of the show for $10 with a valid student ID. Tickets are available at the IU Auditorium or through Ticketmaster. Visit www.theatre.indiana.edu for more information.
