World travel and thrifty adventure will be the main topic today as travel author Doug Lansky gives insight on the benefits and challenges facing young explorers. The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Whittenberger Auditorium at the Indiana Memorial Union and will feature photos, videos and commentary from Lansky’s many travels. This free event will be followed by a raffle drawing for a $1,000 Eurail ticket. \nUnion Board Director of Lectures Hana Ros said that along with the chance to win the “euro” ticket, students attending the lecture will get a firsthand account of traveling abroad on a tight budget. Upon graduating from Colorado College, Lansky decided to take a risk and go abroad with very little money, Ros said. Now a contributing writer for National Geographic and Esquire Magazine, he has since spent the last 10 years traveling to more than 100 countries, according to his Web site. He is the author of multiple books, including “There’s No Toilet Paper on the Road Less Traveled,” and he also writes a weekly syndicated travel column, which runs in 40 newspapers across the country. \n“The Union Board tries to attract a variety of speakers,” Ros said. “We thought that Lansky would appeal to a wide range of students who are passionate about travel or maybe just thinking about traveling abroad.”\nAccording to a press release for the event, Lansky will be able to “help students live their dreams of traveling the world, or influence others to create their own opportunity to do so.” \nIn addition to the lecture, the IU School of Journalism will collaborate with Lansky on a workshop for journalism students interested in getting a better grasp on the ins and outs of writing abroad.
