Judgment Day

University officials expected to hold press conference Friday

Jay Seawell

University officials will announce Friday the fate of IU men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson, IU trustee Phil Eskew Jr. said Thursday. \n“It is just my understanding that there will be an announcement tomorrow,” Eskew said, after receiving an e-mail from an IU administrator about Sampson’s situation.\nSampson’s future is uncertain after the NCAA released a report last week detailing five alleged major recruiting violations committed by the Hoosier coach and his staff. Sampson has a clause in his contract that allows for termination if he commits NCAA violations.\nIU business professor Bruce Jaffee, who helped lead a week-long investigation into the NCAA’s allegations as the faculty representative on the Athletics committee, said the investigation is nearing an end. \n“It will be concluded tomorrow,” Jaffee said Thursday night.\nSeveral media outlets reported Thursday that Sampson would not continue to coach the Hoosiers. But none of the stories are accurate, according to Eskew and IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre. \n“I don’t think anybody knows anything, including me,” Eskew said. “I don’t think either one of those reports are true.” \nIU Student Association President W.T. Wright said Thursday Jaffee had asked him for his opinion regarding \nSampson’s future. \n“I would be surprised if he’s coaching the next game,” Wright said. \nThe No. 15 Hoosiers travel to Northwestern on Saturday.\nThe investigation, which was announced at a press conference last week, calls for IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan to deliver a recommendation to IU President Michael McRobbie regarding Sampson’s future at the University. \nGreenspan and McRobbie met midday Thursday in person, though MacIntyre said he could not speculate about the nature of their conversation. \nGreenspan and Senior Associate Athletics Director Tim Fitzpatrick were entrenched in Greenspan’s Assembly Hall office until just before midnight Thursday. \nWhen chased down by reporters, Greenspan told the Indiana Daily Student that he had “no comment at this time.”\nIn addition to Greenspan, the two other people leading the investigation – Jaffee and University general counsel Dorothy Frapwell – met with McRobbie in his office during lunch, Jaffee said. Jaffee declined to discuss the topic of the conversation.\nThough McRobbie said last week that there was no timetable for his decision, Eskew said the e-mail he received said a decision will be made by Friday. \nMacIntyre said no press conference has been scheduled for Friday, but his staff is preparing as if there might be one.\n“I have not had any direction that this is what we’re going to say or when we’re going to say it,” he said.\nThe team did not practice Thursday, but met around 3 p.m. at Assembly Hall. Several media outlets reported the meeting was to discuss the coaching situation. \nIU junior forward DeAndre Thomas said the team was not having a team meeting. Other members of the team \ndeclined comment.\nIU athletics spokesman J.D. Campbell told gathered reporters that the meeting was so the players could take a compliance test. \nIU junior forward Kyle Taber said he did not take a compliance test when asked by reporters as he left Assembly Hall. Additional players that filed into the parking lot also declined comment.\nIU Assistant Athletics Director for Compliance Jennifer Brinegar told the Indiana Daily Student she had no comment when asked if the team was, in fact, taking a compliance test.\nSports Editor Matt Dollinger and Special Projects Editor Brian Spegele contributed to this report.
