IU President Michael McRobbie will announce Friday an investigation into five alleged “major” recruiting violations by IU men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff, a source close to the administration told the Indiana Daily Student on Thursday. \nMcRobbie, who will appoint IU Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan to review the investigation, will make the announcement at a press conference Friday afternoon and will expect a recommendation in the next few days, the source said.\nSampson is expected to continue coaching during the investigation.\nMcRobbie has met with Greenspan, the University’s general counsel and several trustees since receiving a list of five alleged “major violations” from the NCAA last week, said IU spokesman Larry MacIntyre.\nThe NCAA alleged Sampson lied to investigators regarding his role in a series of recruiting violations committed by the coach and his IU staff. Sampson refuted the allegations Wednesday following IU’s 68-66 loss to Wisconsin.\nMcRobbie spoke with several trustees over the past week, though he has not convened the entire group, MacIntyre said.\nMcRobbie does not need the trustees’ consent to fire Sampson, MacIntyre said.\nNed Sampson, Kelvin’s father, told the Indiana Daily Student on Thursday that his son is concerned about his job security. \n“He’s worried,” Ned Sampson said, though he added he did not believe his son would resign as coach.\nSampson’s contract with IU includes a clause that allows the University to terminate the contract if he is “found to be in violation of any NCAA regulations.”\nOn Wednesday, Greenspan did not confirm or deny whether he had discussed the possibility of firing Sampson.\nSampson’s father, a former basketball coach, currently lives in Pembroke, N.C., with his wife and Kelvin Sampson’s mother, Eva. He said he was disappointed to hear the news about his son.\n“It sounds pretty bad to me,” Ned Sampson said.\nHe said he has talked to his son several times throughout the past few days regarding the allegations, but said he has not given his son any advice regarding the alleged violations.\n“He knows more about the situation than I do,” Ned Sampson said.\nKelvin Sampson will meet with members of the media Friday afternoon to discuss IU’s upcoming game against No. 10 Michigan State. But IU athletics spokesman J.D. Campbell told members of the media in an e-mail that Sampson will only address the Hoosiers’ upcoming game against the Spartans.\n“As he stated last night, he cannot answer any questions regarding the recent letter of NCAA allegations,” Campbell said in the e-mail.\nSampson read a prepared statement Wednesday night and said he would not address the situation again. He refused to answer all questions pertaining to the allegations.
