This year, the IU chapter of Phi Beta Sigma is going to stomp the yard.\nThe brothers of the Epsilon Iota chapter of Phi Beta Sigma will host the 24th Annual Phi Beta Sigma Statewide Stepdown Competition at 7 p.m. Saturday at the IU Auditorium. \n“The Indiana Statewide Stepdown is a great diversity event that showcases the African American Greek letter organizations, not only for the Indiana University campus but also the Bloomington community,” said Derrick Howard, a member of Phi Beta Sigma.\nThe step show features other chapters of Phi Beta Sigma throughout the state. The step down competition is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an “instrument” to produce complex rhythms and sounds.\nThe different chapters compete for a money prize, bragging rights and the opportunity to host the show on their home grounds the following year. IU won last year, so the chapter is hosting the event this year.\n“Everyone can see traditional stepping that traces back to Africa,” said Muhammad Saahir, member of Phi Beta Sigma. \nSaahir said it is entertainment for the campus to build bridges across different cultures on campus.\n“We are trying to expose as many people as we can to the stepping culture,” Saahir said.\nHoward said the IU Phi Beta Sigmas are expecting to exceed last year’s attendance by selling all 3,000 seats in the auditorium. \nTickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show will begin at 7 p.m. and are on sale now at the IU Auditorium or through Ticketmaster. An official after-party will be held at the Student Recreational Sports Center following the step show. \nSaahir said he’s excited his chapter gets to host the competition this year.\n“New champ, new location,” he said.
