Dakich's salary increases with interim title, revised contract

Jacob Kriese

Both interim head coach Dan Dakich and assistant head coach Ray McCallum are guaranteed payment from the University through the 2008-2009 season, according to their revised contracts signed after the resignation of former coach Kelvin Sampson.\nThe contracts were obtained Tuesday by the Indiana Daily Student through an open records request filed with the University.\nUnder the new agreement, effective Feb. 22, Dakich will continue to earn his $110,000 base salary, but will now receive an additional $75,000 for “public relations and promotional services,” such as the Inside Indiana Basketball radio show and participating in the team’s apparel contract.\nMcCallum will receive the same salary he earned as assistant coach, $150,000. McCallum and the University will reach a new agreement if he is retained beyond this season. If he is not, McCallum will continue to receive his salary, $325 car allowance, $200 cell phone allowance and the monetary equivalent of health care benefits through June 30, 2009.\nDakich also had several incentive clauses in the contract based on the team’s performance for the remainder of the season. Dakich would have received $10,000 if the team won the Big Ten conference or $40,000 if the team won the Big Ten Tournament – the team did not win either one of those championships.\nIf the Hoosiers beat Arkansas in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, McCallum will receive one-half month’s salary extra ($6,250), the same bonus he would earn if they advanced to the Sweet 16. A Final Four berth will earn McCallum one month’s salary ($12,500) and a National Championship would give McCallum a $25,000 bonus.\nThe contract calls for Dakich to be paid $20,000 if the team advances to the Sweet 16, $20,000 if the team makes the Final Four and $100,000 if the Hoosiers win the NCAA Championship.\nOn March 7, an addendum was agreed to that pays Dakich $15,000 if the team advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The addendum was signed five days after the Hoosiers were thumped 103-74 at Michigan State and two days after the Hoosiers won a closely contested home game against Minnesota.\nIf Dakich is not retained on the coaching staff, or as the director of basketball operations, he will continue to be employed by the athletic department through June 30, 2009, in “a non-sales administrative employment position reporting to Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan,” the contract says.\nThe future of the two coaches is uncertain as the University announced Monday that a 10-person search committee has been formed to conduct a nationwide search for a new basketball coach. Regardless of who the new head coach for the Hoosiers is, the two coaches will continue to be paid by the University.
