Greek groups ‘stomp the yard’ for cash prizes

For the second time in a row, fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha and sorority Zeta Phi Beta won the sixth Annual Stepdown Saturday at the IU Auditorium.\nMore than 1,000 people showed up to see IU greek organizations “stomp the yard” for a cash prize.\nTony Roberts from BET Comic View hosted the show. \nTo break the ice, Roberts joked with the crowd with his own renditions of famous songs. Between teams, Roberts would do roll call of the participating organizations and joke with audience \nmembers.\nThe first vice president of the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Morgan White, said the step show was divided into two sections. Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma and Alpha Phi Alpha were the \nfour fraternities. \nEach organization featured a theme in its performance to distinguish it from the rest.\nTo start the show, Zeta Phi Beta’s performance used a robot theme. \n“The Zeta’s held it down once again,” sophomore audience member Jessica Herron said. “The precision in their steps was very nice.”\nDelta Sigma Theta came in second place with an Arabian \ngenie theme. \nFor the third year in the row, Alpha Phi Alpha won in the fraternity contest with a \nchurch theme. \n“I am so excited about our win,” said Deric Geter, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. \nThe winners received a $2,000 prize and the second place winners received $1,000. \nGeter said his fraternity plans to use the prize for the next school year and for scholarships.\nSome audience members said they were impressed by the number of particpants competing in the step show.\n“I really enjoyed the variety of contestants this year,” said Teirra Riggs, a member of Delta Sigma Theta.\nRiggs said she was surprised to see Omega Phi Psi because this was the first time she had ever seen the fraternity step.\nPhi Beta Sigma won second place in the fraternity section.\n“I really enjoyed the show this year,” sophomore Freddie Campbell said. “I had a good time.”
