Indiana-based band attemps to make breakthrough

Indie rock bands can usually be identified by their rather unusual names. Examples: Death Cab for Cutie, Arctic Monkeys, Minus The Bear.\nAt 8 p.m. Thursday, another of these unusually named bands will be hitting Bloomington, when independent rockers Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s bring their music to the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. \nThe band formed from the collaboration of three different bands, said drummer Chris Fry.\n“When Richard was recording, they’d just go ask me or the original guy, Jesse,” Fry said. “In 2005 we started really swinging.”\nWhen the band first began touring, they opened for a band named South from England. This jump-started their popularity, getting them featured on XM Radio and in magazine promotions. \nSince their introduction into the music world, they have regularly been compared to Arcade Fire, Death Cab for Cutie and The Decemberists. \nDespite their similarities to these bands, their inspirations vary, from Radiohead and The Flaming Lips to The Beach Boys and early ’80s pop, said Fry and guitarist Richard Edwards.\nMost of the songs on their 2006 album “The Dust of Retreat” tell a story. \n“Some of them are biographical, autobiographical and some are fictitious,” Fry said. “It’s harder to sing about something unless there’s a story inside.”\nThe band consists of eight members who all bring in their own inspiration and unique talent:\nRichard Edwards, vocals and guitar; Andy Fry, guitar; Chris Fry, drums; Hubert Glover, trumpet; Casey Tennis, percussion; Emily Watkins, vocals and piano; Tyler Watkins, bass; Erik Kang, violin and lap steel, according to their Web site.\nMargot begins their tour in May. \n“We’re going west again, to California and Colorado,” Edwards said. “After that we’re going to record another record.”\nIn the meantime, the band will be releasing their second album, titled “Animals!”. \n“We’re going to attempt to have this grow as much as the universe wants us to go,” Edwards said.
