The University confirmed Thursday that 30 members of the Beta Theta chapter of the Kappa Sigma fraternity were expelled from the chapter earlier in the week.\nAccording to a Monroe Circuit Court document filed April 7, the members were expelled from their N. Jordan Ave. house for “excessive damage to the facility” and “communicated threats to property and staff.”\nA local sheriff witnessed the threats from the members of Kappa Sigma while working at the chapter house between April 1 and 4, according to \nthe document.\nIn an eviction notice from the president of the national fraternity, the members were required to vacate their chapter house within 48 hours of April 8. The expelled members are no longer to receive meals or other services and are not allowed to have any contact with any member of the organization while on the property. Those expelled were instructed to only go to their rooms and remove their belongings from the house. According to the document, those expelled can no longer visit the house or be on the property, located at 1411 N. Jordan Ave. \nThe national fraternity made the decision to expel the Kappa Sigma members, according to the document. The national fraternity did not return calls by press time.\nDean of Students Dick McKaig said he was aware of the national fraternity’s decision.\nMcKaig said the issue is between the IU chapter and the national fraternity. The University has not been informed as to why the members were kicked out, he said, but that the chapter is “dealing with some problems”.\n“The house remains in good standing with the University,” McKaig said.\nMcKaig said he did not know any other details of the situation.\nMcKaig requested a list of the expelled Kappa Sigma members so the University could look into whether the members violated University code, which could affect their enrollments at IU, according to the eviction notice.\nAccording to the court document, the national fraternity released the names of all the expelled members on the fraternity’s national Web site. \nPart of Kappa Sigma’s mission statement involves the promotion of ethical behavior and decision-making, and it demands the highest standards of behavior, according to the Web site. Anything that is not within the fraternity’s mission is considered “intolerant and abrasive behavior” and is \nnot accepted.
