Lewis named starting QB, Middleton suspended one game

IU quarterback Kellen Lewis tries to escape the grasp of two saluki defenders during a Sept. 16, 2006 game at Memorial Stadium.

IU football coach Bill Lynch named junior Kellen Lewis the team’s starting quarterback as it heads into the season opener against Western Kentucky on Saturday.

Lewis was suspended for undisclosed reasons during spring practice and into the summer. Last month, Lynch reinstated Lewis but said he would have to battle sophomore Ben Chappell for the starting job.

In 2007, Lewis led a high-powered offense to the program’s first bowl game since 1993.
Though Lewis is back, Lynch suspended junior defensive lineman Greg Middleton for the season opener for an unspecified reason.

Middleton enjoyed a stellar sophomore season, leading the nation with 16 sacks. Also suspended are freshman defensive lineman Kyle Kozak, senior safety Brandon Mosley and junior tight end Troy Wagner.
