Canines rule Bryan Park Pool

Darby, a White Lab, returns a tennis ball to owner Carol Moore at Bryan Park Pool Thursday evening. Dogs were allowed entry for five dollars, while humans were free.

Those who know doggy paddling best got a chance to show everyone how it is done this week.

The fourth annual Drool in the Pool event began Thursday at Bryan Park Pool and will continue Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.

“It’s not very often you get to see a whole bunch of motley dogs in the public swimming pool,” said Laura Lane, a Bloomington Herald-Times reporter and second-time judge.

Drool in the Pool is an event where residents can bring their dogs to swim in Bryan Park Pool and enter them in contests before the pool is drained for the winter. It’s made possible by a partnership between the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation office and White River Co-op.

Only one dog is allowed per person, and dogs must be at least 6 months old. Owners must provide written proof from a veterinarian that their dogs have been vaccinated for rabies, said Becky Barrick, community events manager.

Admission is $5 per dog. Spectators are welcome free of charge.

The affair is only for fun. The money collected goes to running the event, and very little profit is generated, Barrick, said. She said people do not realize how much money it takes to make it happen. Activities will continue during rain, but if a thunderstorm occurs and lightning is visible from the pool, everything will be canceled, said Sarah Nix, program specialist. Anyone questioning weather conditions should call 349-3754.
Most of the main pool and the children’s Limestone Lagoon are open for the dogs to swim and enjoy fetching toys. Owners can stay as long as they wish, but are not allowed in the pool with their pets.

Friday’s event is packed with activities and contests. This year is the first for the cutest dog contest, Lane said. It is amusing to watch as a variety of dogs struggle with obstacle courses and compete for best dressed, she said. Many dogs attending the event are shelter dogs, and Lane said she is happy to support them.
First place winners of each category will get a trophy, and the grand prize winner will receive a year’s supply of dog food from PMI Nutrition.

If anyone is looking for a new best friend, the Bloomington Animal Shelter will also be present Friday with dogs up for adoption, Barrick said. Last year 225 dogs participated and 650 people attended, she said.

“It’s really a sight to see,” Barrick said.
