Former Hoosier basketball player remains hospitalized after quadruple bypass

LUBBOCK, Texas – Stew Robinson, an assistant basketball coach at Texas Tech and former IU player, remained hospitalized Tuesday, a day after undergoing quadruple bypass surgery.

Robinson, who played for former IU coach Bob Knight, is heading into his sixth year with the Red Raiders.

He went in for a routine physical last week and was diagnosed with heart disease.
The Anderson native played at IU from 1982 through 1986 and remained in shape beyond his playing days. Robinson, who is in his early 40s, felt some discomfort after a workout last week, said his wife, Tracy. That prompted the visit to the doctor.

Doctors initially believed Robinson needed a triple-bypass but entered a fourth artery during the two-and-a-half hour surgery Monday, she said in a story for Tuesday’s online edition of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.

Robinson was expected to remain in the hospital until the end of the week, Tracy Robinson said.

“It was a shock to everybody,” Texas Tech head coach Pat Knight said. “Especially with what happened (Sunday) to coach (Don) Haskins, these things kind of put things into perspective.”

Haskins, a pioneering coach at UTEP, died Sunday.
