Keeper nabs weekly Big Ten honor after 2-win weekend

The IU field hockey team’s sophomore goalkeeper Alex Mann picked up Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week after allowing just one goal during two games in Missouri last weekend, according to a press release.

Mann recorded five saves in a shutout victory against Saint Louis, the most saves in a single game by a Hoosier this year. She has 13 saves this season, good for just more than three a game.

“We were tested,” IU coach Amy Robertson said in the release. “I give a lot of credit to Saint Louis. They found ways to get through our defense here and there, and they tested Alex. She just did a great job.”

Mann is the first Hoosier to win the defensive accolade since former goaltender Haley Exner, now a student assistant coach, won it a year ago this week.

IU takes the field again this weekend with two games in Winston-Salem, N.C., against Ohio on Saturday and Wake Forest on Sunday. The Hoosiers get things started at 3:15 p.m. Saturday against the Bobcats.
