MEXICO CITY – Mexican investigators are looking at the powerful La Familia drug gang as a suspect in the deadly Independence Day grenade attack.
A spokeswoman with Mexico’s Attorney General’s office says authorities also are investigating a text message allegedly signed by La Familia that was sent to the cell phones of reporters and Morelia residents. The gang denied carrying out the attack that killed seven and injured 108 in its base of Morelia.
The message blames the feared Zetas, hitmen for the Gulf Cartel. That’s notable because La Familia is believed to be allied with the Gulf Cartel. The message suggests the two groups may have had a falling out.
