Former basketball player Vaden arrested in Bloomington on Saturday

Former IU men’s basketball standout Robert Vaden was arrested Saturday morning on suspicion of public intoxication, said Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Jeff Canada, reading from a police report.

Vaden, who left to go to UAB with Mike Davis after Davis resigned as head coach after the 2006 season, was arrested at the 300 block of North Walnut Street at 2 a.m. Saturday.

Last season Vaden scored more than 21 points for UAB after sitting out the 2006-07 season for transferring. Vaden was projected as a second-round draft pick this year before deciding to stay at UAB for his senior year.

A Bloomington officer was driving north on Walnut when he saw a subject in a red shirt pushing people, Canada said.

The officer approached Vaden, 23, and reported his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred, and his breath smelled like alcohol.

Hoosier fans will remember Vaden as one of the highly-touted recruits of the 2004 class, which included D.J. White, A.J. Ratliff, Kyle Taber and now-NFL wide receiver James Hardy.

Canada said the report did not indicate what Vaden, who currently lives in Indianapolis, was doing in Bloomington.
