Vox Lumiere’s ‘Hunchback of
Notre Dame’
When: 8 p.m. Friday
Where: Buskirk-Chumley Theater
More info: The cost is $15, and the performance is general admission. Vox Lumiere is a group that takes silent movies and writes music and lyrics to go with it. Various members of the group will be the actors voices.
“Vox Lumiere is rock concert meets silent film,” said creator and producer Kevin Saunders Hayes, who writes all the lyrics for the performance.
The concept began as an idea of Hayes’, who compared it to Peter Gabriel and Charlie Chaplin under the influence of too much cappuccino.
“I’m a film composer and a song writer,” he said. “It began as an experiment, truly. ... These are amazing, beautiful movies that no one’s paying attention to.”
The group takes a silent movie – in this case, the 1923 version of “Hunchback of Notre Dame” starring Lon Chaney in the title role – and Hayes writes the music and lyrics for that movie. The ensemble then performs his songs as the movie plays overhead, with each ensemble member becoming the voice of a character. There are also multimedia elements to help bring the film to life for its audience, Hayes said, such as creating a cathedral onstage with projections.
“We try to 3-dimensionalize the movie,” he said.
The experience is truly unique, Hayes said, with something for everyone.
“It’s definitely new and different,” he said. “There’s absolutely nothing like it.”

The Shalom Community Center, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, Stepping Stones and Martha’s House present ‘Bloomington, Stand Up!’
When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday
Where: Buskirk-Chumley Theater
More info: The cost is $35 in advance and $40 on the day of the show. Comedian Drew Hastings’ performance will be the headlining event for National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week in Bloomington, said Shalom Community Center Executive Director Joel Rekas. “It’s an experiment. We’ve never done a comedy benefit before,” Rekas said. “It seems like people are very excited about it.”
Fans – or potential fans – can check out Hastings’ Web site, www.drewhastings.com, to watch video clips, read his blog and biography or buy T-shirts with quotes such as “I may not have the key to success but I know how to pick the lock.”
The primary goal of this week’s event was to raise awareness, but a close second was fundraising, Rekas said, because small, nonprofit organizations are the ones on the front lines when it comes to hunger and homelessness.
“We’re going for the entertainment, obviously, but we’re also going to support the cause,” Rekas said.
