NCAA levies probation on IU

IU coach Tom Crean reads a document Tuesday in the parking lot of the Lahaina (Hawaii) Civic Center, the site of the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational. Earlier in the day, Crean's Hoosiers fell 80-54 to Saint Joseph's in the second round of the tournament.

The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions placed IU on a probationary period starting Tuesday.

The reprimand comes down after the NCAA found former men's basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and staff made recruiting violations, to which the University improperly monitored.

The probationary period will last three years, ending November 24, 2011.

According to a report released from the committee, per the probation the University must create a "comprehensive educational program on NCAA legislation."

This includes seminars and testing to instruct all athletics department personnel and University staff members "with responsibility for the certification of student-athletes for admission, retention, financial aid or competition."

The University must also submit a report to the committee by February 1, 2009, "setting forth a schedule for establishing this compliance and educational program."

In each year of their probation the University will have to provide annual compliance reports, demonstrating the progress of the programs.
