NCAA to announce men's basketball decision today

Teleconference scheduled for 4 p.m.

The NCAA Committee on Infractions announced today that it will hand down its decision regarding the IU men’s basketball team’s case, with a 4 p.m. teleconference scheduled for today.

Committee chair Josephine Potuto will make the announcement on the call, according to an NCAA press release.

The decision will bring to a close a lengthy process that began last October, when the University self-reported a slew of improper phone calls by former men’s basketball coach Kelvin Sampson and his staff. Sampson eventually left the University the following February, and current coach Tom Crean replaced interim coach Dan Dakich on the first of April.

The NCAA had originally leveled a charge of five major violations against IU, adding a sixth at a June COI hearing in Seattle. One of the original five was reduced to a minor infraction, but the additional charge – failure to monitor – was perhaps the most serious.

Immediately following the last infraction, Director of Athletics Rick Greenspan announced he would resign at the end of 2008, becoming the latest casualty in the Sampson debacle.
