Guillermo del Toro is really making a name for himself. After directing “Blade II,” “Hellboy” and then the three-time Oscar winner “Pan’s Labyrinth,” del Toro continued his quest to become one of today’s top-notch directors by writing and directing Hellboy’s second adventure “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.”
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” revolves around an evil prince who breaks a longtime pact with humans and creatures. He plans to release The Golden Army, mean-spirited war machines that are capable of destroying the human race. Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and his crew of policing creatures are out to stop this evil prince from causing what could be the worst thing ever to happen to society.
Del Toro’s ability to use evil-looking creatures with good intentions is fascinating. For instance, Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) is a monster, one that looks evil, but who has a collection of sophisticated books, listens to classical music and talks as if he has the highest IQ in the history of mankind.
Hellboy is in a whole new league. He says corny lines, loves Cuban cigars and enjoys watching television. But when he’s not doing those things, Hellboy shoots monsters or punches a creature so hard it flies at least 50 feet until it hits something, and then he lights up another cigar.
The film is packed with grade-A entertainment. Everything builds off what came before it, so it’s easy to fall in love with the characters.
Anyone who likes the movie will be a fan of the DVD. It comes with awesome commentary, a documentary discussing all aspects of the film’s production, a DVD-ROM script for viewing on the computer and more.
“Hellboy II: The Golden Army” is amazing at every level. It may not be the most famous comic book ever, but when it comes to on-screen performance, it has surpassed almost every single one of its comic book peers.
Who said hell can’t be fun?
