IU opens indoor season with home tournament

Training has ended, and it’s time for the Hoosiers to match up against real competition.

After training all summer and fall, IU will open up its indoor track and field season at home with the Indiana Open, beginning 11 a.m. Saturday at Gladstein Fieldhouse.

IU coach Ron Helmer said the Hoosiers are ready to go.

“There are so many things you want to get done in track and field,” Helmer said. “This is big time track and field, and it’s easy for everyone to get excited since it is the first meet.”

This weekend’s event will feature 13 college teams and five club teams. There will be 30 events, the first being the women’s long jump preliminaries.

Helmer said the team is solid in all events and should compete accordingly.

“I think we are a well-rounded team,” he said. “While some people are more experienced, we have very good people competing and have all the events covered.”
