Boxcar Books will celebrate its seven-year anniversary with friends and customers Saturday.
Beginning at 6 p.m., vegan and non-vegan desserts and drinks will be served to a bit of background music to which people can mix and mingle.
As a thanks to the community, there will be a 20 percent off sale and door prizes, which include the store’s favorite pastime: books.
Aside from its anniversary, the store puts on fundraising events throughout the year to help support its nonprofit organization. Boxcar is considered a charitable organization that funds itself by selling books and working closely with Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project, said general coordinator Abbey Friedman.
Boxcar recently moved from its former location on S. Washington Street to Sixth Street.
Close proximity to campus draws in students and invites the work of local writers. Friedman said the store just keeps growing.
With the rising popularity of self-published magazines called “zines,” Boxcar’s staff is proud of the store’s expansive collection, said Colin Roy-Ehri, coordinator of IT Taxes and Legal Work for Boxcar.
Roy-Ehri said Boxcar is one of the biggest “zine” suppliers in the state.
Supporting artists locally, nationally and internationally while also encouraging self-education in the prison system, Boxcar still finds time to put together a celebration for friends and devoted followers.
“We just want to say thanks for the support over all the years,” Friedman said. “Here’s to a few more.”
