Hudson’s Super Bowl anthem showed courage

During the Super Bowl on Sunday, emotions were flying, from anger to excitement. Viewers from the stands and couches were all watching one of the biggest games of the year.

There wasn’t just the game, the ads and the halftime show as per usual, but something that everyone should truly appreciate: Grammy-nominated singer Jennifer Hudson’s outstanding performance after a three-month hiatus.

After Faith Hill’s rendition of “America the Beautiful,” Hudson courageously stepped back into the spotlight to sing the national anthem.

Hudson’s mother and brother were recently killed in their Chicago home, and her 7-year-old nephew went missing in October. Her nephew was found dead a week later. Police have arrested Hudson’s brother-in-law as the prime suspect in the case.

Her tragedy is mind-blowing, but her strength and poise were downright amazing.
To sing such an emotional and powerful song while her pain and heartache were still on her mind was undoubtedly difficult.

The song itself would be gut-wrenching to sing. As she sang about freedom and beauty here in America, three of the people she loved the most were denied the freedom to live.

Hudson’s tragedy is by no means America’s fault: rather, the irony of a beautiful and happy America was right in our faces. I have nothing but admiration for her. Anyone who has the strength to stand in front of millions of people with wounds as fresh as hers deserves the utmost respect.

Not only was her voice powerful – she looked amazing. Her beauty stood out as she sang.

It’s not easy continuing life after a loved one dies. For those who have experienced it, you know. That is why those who rise from ashes deserve the highest degree of appreciation.

The Super Bowl was not just a game or a tradition for Hudson and her family, but a personal symbol of recovery and hope.

Her next planned performance is at the Grammy Awards on Sunday. I am excited to see what she’ll bring, not just to the stage, but to the people around her.

Kudos to Hudson, and I hope the future brings her some well-deserved happiness.
