Grant deadline approaches

Artists looking to advance their careers have the chance to win a scholarship sponsored by the Bloomington Area Arts Council.

The Bloomington Area Arts Council, in partnership with the Greer Foundation for the Arts, invites ceramic artists and creative writers to apply for its 2009 fellowship program, which will award four artists $1000 each, according to a Bloomington Area Arts Council press release.

Katherine Paschal, director of arts outreach with the Bloomington Area Arts Council, said that students are ineligible to apply for the fellowship, since the fellowship is not awarded from degree-granting programs.

She said the partnership developed when personnel from the Greer Foundation approached the Bloomington Area Arts Council a few years ago.

The Greer Foundation honors the memory of Bloomington artists Jason and Lucy Greer, who were creative writing and ceramics artists, respectively.

“They both took classes on ceramics and creative writing at the Waldron Arts Center,” Pashcal said.

The fellowship encourages artists who have already shown exemplary work in both fields to further their careers.
