Police say seven residents and one nurse were killed and three others were wounded in a shooting at a North Carolina nursing home.
Carthage Police Chief Chris McKenzie told TV stations WRAL and WTVD in North Carolina that the shootings happened around 10 a.m. at Pinelake Health and Rehab in the town of Carthage.
Authorities said Robert Stewart, the gunman who’s in custody, was injured, as was a police officer.
It was not clear what Stewart’s motive might have been.
A nursing home Web site said the facility about 60 miles southwest of Raleigh has 90 beds and specializes caring for those with Alzheimer’s.
Calls to the police and the nursing home by The Associated Press rang unanswered Sunday.
