Baseball teams embrace vintage look

With all the excitement around Opening Day and the start of the baseball season, I thought it only appropriate to step up to the plate and focus on some Major League Baseball fashion.

Even in the sports world, designers have incorporated current fashion trends. In direct reference to all the vintage styles we have seen on the runway lately, many of the official baseball uniforms have a retro vibe.

The Baltimore Orioles have decided to go back in time 36 years by styling the word “Baltimore” on their road jerseys. Other throwbacks this season include road and alternative jersey changes by the Boston Red Sox and Minnesota Twins. The Red Sox’s jerseys dropped the piping and now include navy lettering and numbering, giving it a more classic look.

But perhaps the best example of this vintage trend is demonstrated through the Pittsburgh Pirates’ black button-down for select home and road games. This new black jersey features the classic gold “P” on the left side of the chest.

Another predominant change among the major-leaguers include patches used for memorializing. The Twins, Angels and Blue Jays are all sporting two arm patches this season in remembrance of important figures such as Carl Pohlad, Preston Gomez and Ted Rogers.

Small color modifications have been made among teams in hats, batting helmets and jersey piping. The Chicago Cubs, for example, will now use a solid-blue hat for all their games. As a Cubbie fan at heart, I must say I approve of the change. The red accenting was way too distracting for my taste.

With these fashion changes being made on the field, it is obvious it will translate in official MLB wear. So hopefully all of you sports fans approve of this retro craze.
However, if you are a girl looking for a trendier alternative in sportswear, I suggest you check out the brand Touch by Alyssa Milano.

Her line includes elements such as polo dresses, ruffled hoodies, floral tanks, babydoll tops and fitted jackets, all with official logos and team colors. That way you can show your team spirit and still be girly.

Just because sports and fashion are often thought to be on opposite sides of the spectrum, that does not mean it’s true. Fashion is a part of our everyday lives, and even the baseball players stay in trend. Remember, if you describe your style as comfortable, laid-back and sporty, there is always a fashionable option.
