With perfection within their grasp, the Connecticut Huskies held on for a 76-54 defeat of the Louisville Cardinals in the NCAA women’s basketball championship.
Connecticut (39-0) was the first team to finish a full season undefeated since it did so in 2002. Only two other schools in women’s basketball history – Tennessee and Texas – have finished a season unblemished.
Connecticut coach Geno Auriemma, this year’s Naismith women’s basketball coach of the year, also led the 2002 team to the finals. This year’s title win pushed his national championship total to five.
