IU played its way to the next round of the Big Ten Tournament by defeating Michigan State 4-1 on Thursday.
The No. 6 Hoosiers gained an early lead by winning the doubles point. Sophomore Lachlan Ferguson and freshman Stephen Vogl shut out their Spartan opponent with an 8-0 victory. Sophomore Santiago Gruter and freshman Jeremy Langer grabbed the doubles point for the Hoosiers, winning 8-3.
Ranked No. 103 nationally, Ferguson earned the next point, putting away his opponent in straight sets. Shortly after, Langer gained a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The Spartans took the next point when freshman Maxime Armengaud was defeated 6-3, 6-2. IU freshman Will Kendall was able pull away with the fourth point for the Hoosier victory, winning his match 6-4, 7-5.
The cream and crimson move to the second round to take on No. 3 Minnesota (17-6, 7-3). The Hoosiers lost to the Golden Gophers 6-1 during regular season action.
