7 Hoosiers prepare to compete in Arkansas

Seven Hoosiers will try to become forever known as champions in their events this week in Fayetteville, Ark.

Freshman Derek Drouin, sophomore Sarah Pease, juniors Molly Beckwith, Vera Neuenswander, Ashley Rhoades, Wendi Robinson and senior Tiffany Howard will all compete for a national championship in their individual events.

IU coach Ron Helmer said though none of his competitors are expected to win, a few of them have a chance.

“We have three people in the mix for a national championship,” he said. “Vera, Derek and Molly are not favorites, but certainly capable of winning it all.”

Drouin and Neuenswander are coming off regional championships, and Beckwith has the third-fastest time in the 800-meter run this year.

The championship will also determine a team national champion using a scoring system that features 10 points for the winner of each event, with second through eighth place awarded eight, six, five, four, three, two and one points, respectively.

Helmer said no matter what, he expects all his athletes to place in the top eight.

“Anybody who qualifies for the championship has a good chance at earning All-American status,” he said.
