“Volunteers are a big part of what we do here at Hoosier Hills Food Bank,” said Jake Bruner, office manager of the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. “We have several events during the year, MLK day, Soup bowl and Hunger Action Month. But we have one awards ceremony per year.”
This year six “hunger recognition” awards were given out to people Friday and organizations and the community including Bread for Bloomington, Volunteers for Change, The Crawford County CSFP Crew, Bloomingfoods Market & Deli, Community Kitchen of Monroe County and Nancy Calaster.
The newest of the six being, Volunteers for Change. An organization that was started by political volunteers working to elect Barack Obama; now transformed into a continuing effort to improve their community.
“The first thing they did after the election was create the campaign for food,” said Julio Alonso, executive director of Hoosier Hills Food Bank. “They have really helped us by keeping the community involved and by having door-to-door food drives.”
Another organization that was recognized at the ceremony was Bread for Bloomington. An organization started two years ago by Rob Dubinski of Campus Life and others to give high school students and other youth opportunities to get involved in their community.
“This year we have seen a defining of our ideas and we wanted to help Hoosier Hills Food Bank from the beginning,” said Rob Dubinski. “This year we have also created more opportunities for those who want to get involved and were able to meet less and do more.”
“In 2008, over 1,800 volunteers and over 300 food donors enabled Hoosier Hills Food Bank to distribute a record 2,459,112 pounds of food to 100 partner food pantries, soup kitchens, youth programs and senior programs in south central Indiana," Alonso said in a press release.
